‘Wanderlust’ by Joseph Cornell

Joseph 6

This month’s book features ‘Wanderlust’ the book that accompanies the exhibition at the Royal Academy which features the work of American artist Joseph Cornell. ( 1903 – 1972 )

The exhibition runs from July 4th through to September 27th and features eighty works of art, some of which have never been seen outside the USA. Cornell collected a vast array of objects by scouring New Yorks thrift shops and used these to become one of the leading exponents of collage and assemblage.

The book is printed on a more toothy matt coated sheet and bound as both a hardback and paperback edition. The hard back is bound in real Brillianta cloth and features two debossed squares on the front and back boards into which on –lays have been placed. The aim of the front on-lay being specifically designed to recreate the image of Cornell’s unique glass fronted ‘shadow boxes’ which were a specific feature of his work.
